About the Position

The Register of Probate is a Constitutional Officer responsible for the care and custody of all files, papers, and books of the Probate Court. As a quasi-judicial officer, the Register has the legal authority to execute formal and informal probate of wills and the appointment of Personal Representatives. This position oversees the overall functioning of the Probate Court and Office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Court Support: Provide administrative and procedural support to the presiding Judge.
  • Case Management: Review and ensure accurate filings from attorneys and the general public, schedule hearings, verify file completeness, and oversee informal probate matters.
  • Financial Oversight: Assist in budget preparation, audit office expenditures, maintain financial records (banking, deposits, bookkeeping), and provide monthly accounting of Probate fees to the County Treasurer.
  • Clerk Duties: Serve as Clerk of the Probate Court and Law Clerk to the Judge, briefing them on hearing matters and other court business.
  • Public Service: Offer compassionate service to the public and effective communication with attorneys, staff, and other courts.
